A Account of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Ground
Back in 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I figured I would book accommodation after getting there, however once I got there, a major event was taking place and every single backpackers hostels and affordable lodging had no vacancies.
Coming from Singapore, I considered perhaps I could spend the night at the airport – but soon learned that airport, not like the one back home, does not operate all night. Not knowing what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded a bus into town and began walking in the direction of the casino, reasoning I might spend the evening in a place that stayed open through the night. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for nailing a crucial interview the next day, yet, as a cash-strapped student, I couldn’t afford.
We could all use more people who show such kindness.
It seems I seemed confused since a woman saw me wandering around the city and wondered if I was OK. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, given that my the important interview would take place the next morning. She went further by offering me some free dinner: a leftover stuffed baguettes she had taken home her evening job. I had access to warm shower facilities and somewhere safe and secure to sleep.
Looking back, I now understand what a big chance she undertook as a woman letting a man she’d just met stay in her room. Back then I operated under a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, I am astonished she did that – but still very grateful.
Ultimately, I did not study at the Australian National University, and I never saw the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me her selfless deed of kindness. It is my wish life has repaid her generosity tenfold. Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
