A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
