Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels down to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
