Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 lives were killed and over 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities is 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased have not yet been officially identified, but investigators think their ages span between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
