The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Reveals He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Might Finish... For Now.

The creative mastermind never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

With the first season of the hit sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.

Regarding the Incredible Audience Reaction

One could easily to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to steer clear of all that.

“The experience is akin to force fed your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it from others, and that's intentional. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

Regardless of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not changed by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes.

A Pressing Query: Has the showrunner Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff aren't taking cues by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… sort of.

“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a better idea. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Alternatively, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Then again, why mess with the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
