The beloved police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last season concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to tackle corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

Yet, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited the show is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of season six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
