The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Claims Unilever Halted Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
The co-founders behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced that corporate owner Unilever stopped the launch of a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who established the company alongside his partner, disclosed that he will independently develop the controversial flavor within an individual series showcasing causes the company has been prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Creators and Parent Company
This latest announcement escalates the continuing tension among the internationally recognized dessert company with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders maintain that the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem of Support
The entrepreneur revealed via social media that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas regarding the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become a symbol of solidarity with Palestinians due to its colors, that match those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism and Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company that originally created in 2016 for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts plus Future Intentions
The founder stated how he will create other ice cream flavors that address issues that the company was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's in September, after many years with the organization, citing worries that the company's autonomy had been undermined after corporate moves to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated how "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can actualise the social mission, the values which it was founded on while upholding for decades," he told media outlets.
