The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the same level as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of eating roast pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The swine, donated by a local firefighter, was named for the modern linguistic fad of young people exclaiming “six seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A New Life
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to begin the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Annually, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
