The Red Devils Set to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Major Signing for United
The forward, with half a year left on her contract, is known as a consistent goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a major signing for the WSL side.
Her exit from Munich was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen additional business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
