US Military Conducts Deadly Attack in Pacific, Leading to 4 Fatalities
As stated by a senior military official, the American military executed a lethal strike on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a deadly attack on a vessel linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Intelligence verified the vessel was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were injured.”
Background and Prior Strikes
The statement comes a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, vowing to increase the military presence.
Just on Tuesday, US defense officials stated it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, more than 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Justifies Actions Amid Scrutiny
The government has faced increasing demands to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, officials have declined to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a success, arguing it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of lawful warfare.
While the administration has stated the campaign is about halting drugs destined for the US, comments from a senior aide appeared to suggest a broader geopolitical aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be part of a push to remove Venezuela's sitting leadership.
